Never before

Spring evening by the sea the same as other days,

yet not the same;

These gulls, these cirrhus clouds, this leafless tree

never before, never again.

Waves lap the shore the same as other times,

yet not the same.

The seagulls, clouds, the changing light each moment of this dusk unique

approaching night.

Rhythmic, eternal, ever the same

yet not the same.

Never is even one wave like the one before;

each one the same, yet new:

Never before, never again.

Dear busy mind, filled up with thoughts

of times ahead, of times behind,

stand still now in this matchless moment.

Be tranquil; make this moment mine.
