Ernest Buckler

Ernest Buckler was born in 1908 in Dalhousie, Nova Scotia, and studied mathematics and philosophy at university. He worked for a few years in Toronto as an actuarial mathematician.
Later he returned to the Annapolis Valley to farm and write and remained there for the remainder of his life. He died in Bridgetown in 1984.
Buckler wrote fiction, memoir, and humour, and a book about his beloved Nova Scotia. He penned radio plays, newspaper columns, book reviews and newspaper articles.
A New Canadian Library edition of his 1952 novel, The Mountain and the Valley, was selected for publication in 2010.
Although he is less widely known than many other Canadian authors, Ernest Buckler's work was much respected and earned him many honours including The Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour.
This farmer writer of rural Nova Scotia received honorary degrees from the venerable Dalhousie University and the The University of New Brunswick and was also given the Canadian Centennial Medal, for valuable service to the nation.
