Craigellachine and the last spike of the CPR
In the beautiful country between Revelstoke and Sicamous, an important historic site lies just off Highway 1. In Gaelic, Craigellachine means rocky hill and also a malt whisky from a town of the same name in Scotland. Here in BC, it marks the spot where the Last Spike was driven in 1885 to complete the sea-to-sea railway, the CPR. Today Canadian Pacific freight trains still travel this line. A small museum commemorates the place. In the picture below, a railroad worker's hammer lies in the foreground. Almost too heavy for me to lift, this is what the folk hero John Henry swung in the famous song.
