Meltemi winds of Greece and Turkey

Between May and October, these annual etesian winds, part of the Asian monsoon system, may reach gale force as they blow across the Aegean from north to northwest. In the mountainous regions of Greece and Turkey and among the Aegean islands, they are channeled into gusts, forming eddies and katabatic winds that roar down mountains.
A meltemi brings dry weather, clear skies, and high pressure. Its arrival may be heralded by altocumulus clouds on the lee sides of islands.
