Ancient symbolism of bulls plays into the survival of bullfighting in Madrid

In ancient Mediterranean cultures, bulls implied power and fertility. Spain is famous -- or infamous -- for bullfighting. In Barcelona, the former bullring has been transformed into a concert venue and shopping area. "In Catalunya, we are kind to animals," the city guide explained.

Bullfighting continues in Madrid. The arena is beautiful, and so is the bas relief wall mural that depicts the running of the bulls.

Sadly, a brief visit to the place revealed the more chilling facts. A special door is used to bring out dead bulls after a contest — but not until the matador has taken an ear or tail as a trophy.
