What’s the opposite of a meaningful relationship? It can’t be a meaningless one. A connection without meaning wouldn’t qualify as a relationship at all. Clear category descriptions would shed more light than the nebulous “meaningful.” Modifiers like new, primary, fiduciary, reciprocal, parental, troubled or sexual would add clarity, and if you’ll excuse the term, meaning, to the tired phrase. Now imagine me throwing you a meaningful glance.

Here’s another contradictory expression: You owe me a favor. Wait. What? As for free gifts, don’t even get me started. Gifts, like favors, are free by definition. Otherwise we ought to call them bargaining chips. Oops. There I go again. Rant Number 47 — go ahead and fill in the blanks, no charge. Consider it my version of a free gift.
